When I first saw Kevin Kubota’s Lighting Notebook hit the stores ,I was immediately intrigued. I’ve been a fan of all things Kubota for quite some time and used his Action Set II religiously for years. To this day, his Mocha B&W is one of my favorites.
I quickly ordered a copy from Amazon, and I’ve finally had a chance to sit down and read the entire thing. In a word, “fantastic.” It’s one of the most accessible lighting books I’ve read. I’m pretty hopeless when it comes to lighting, other than some simple fill lighting with speed lights.
Personally, I loved the little lighting primer at the beginning that goes over the basic kinds of lights, modifiers and lighting styles. And the recipes on how to do certain shots are brilliant. I won’t bore you with all the details. Here’s a video:
