Tip of the Week – Edit In

August 06, 2012

I gleaned this tip of the week a few years back from my good friends Randy and JP of Randy Kepple Photographs and The Art of Joy. It’s a very simple concept that saves an incredible amount of work.

What We Naturally Do

As photographers we love our own work. It’s a simple fact, if we didn’t love our own work we wouldn’t keep doing what we do. We’d find something else to do. So our natural thought pattern is this, “I just took all of these awesome photos, now I’ll delete the bad ones and then move on to editing.”

The Problem

The problem is simple. We end up with too many keepers. I’ve seen other photographers do it, I’ve done it myself. I end up editing 10 photos that are almost exactly the same. I end up doing this multiple times in one shoot and not only do I end up spending way too much time editing, I also end up showing the client too many images that are almost the same. This usually ends up in too many album changes and in weddings and in portraits, showing too much ends up with lower sales.

Editing In

Editing in is such a simple concept. It is simply a different philosophy. The assumption is, “I took a bunch of photos, let’s choose just the good ones.” Once I started doing this I cut down my “keepers” by 30-40%. My imagery was stronger and sales were actually better. If a buyer has too many choices, they can’t decide and if they can’t decide, they don’t buy.

Give It a Try

On your next couple of shoots give it a try. It has helped my workflow a lot.
