Geoff Duncan is an extremely talented photographer out of Austin, Texas, who enjoys traveling as much as taking photos. He was recently named to Rangefinder Magazine’s Top 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography, and “is inspired by couples who want to experiment in the moment and create art together.” Read more about Geoff, and what inspires him.

How did you get started in photography?

While in college, I purchased my first DSLR a few days before a trip to Ethiopia with the non-profit organization Mocha Club. I just wanted a nice camera to document my trip, but quickly became hooked and found myself photographing anything and everything. There was something about freezing a moment in time that fascinated me beyond anything I had ever experienced before. Connecting with people on an emotional level in order to capture their spirit in an authentic way is something that just won’t let me go. When I returned home, I began shooting my friends and local musicians and found that my love for this craft continued to grow the more that I learned. Eventually someone asked me to document their wedding, and I found that I really loved it, and I have been doing it ever since.

What has contributed to your success?

A lot of things have contributed to my success. My friends and family have been instrumental in pushing me forward, and they have always been there to encourage me to pursue my passion. Studying the work of photographers and film makers outside of the wedding industry has inspired me in ways that I can’t fully comprehend. Lastly, having a strong work ethic has helped me push through and I am always looking for ways to improve my craft. To help with motivation I remind myself that there is always more to learn.

What is the most important thing for your continued success?

I would have to say that the most important thing for my continued success is never stop shooting for myself, and not be afraid to take risks. Whether that be contracted jobs or personal work, if I am shooting for myself then I will continue to be happy. Taking risks leads to creating work that will stand out from the crowd.

What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?

My professor used to always say, “You can’t be all things to all people.” This is something that I have taken to heart, as I try to create a product for a very specific type of client, and avoid spreading myself thin trying to please everyone.

What is most important in your photography?

The most important part of my photography is the emotional connection that is felt through an image or a set of images. Whether that be in a portrait or a landscape, I want the viewer to feel something and imagine what it was like to be there that day. I’d much rather be an artist, than a technician.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I am in the process of planning a few workshops for the upcoming year. If you’d like me to come to your city, let me know.
